In a pioneering move, the Cornish village of Kehelland has successfully transitioned dozens of homes and community buildings from kerosene to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)—a renewable liquid fuel that reduces carbon emissions by up to 88%. With only minor boiler tweaks required, the project demonstrates that HVO is a practical and cost-effective solution for decarbonising rural, oil-heated properties.
Kehelland’s story offers a compelling alternative to heat pumps and a scalable blueprint for the UK’s 1.7 million oil-heated homes.
